When Do Kids Start Losing Teeth?

Children usually start losing their baby teeth (teething) from the age of 5 to 6, but there is significant individual variation. It is also normal for them to start as early as 4 years old or as late as 7 years old. Below is the specific timeline and precautions:

1. Sequence and timing of deciduous teeth shedding
Lower central incisor: It is usually the first to fall out, around the age of 5 to 7.
Upper central incisor (middle canine): It appears shortly thereafter, at around 6 to 7 years old.
Lateral incisor: Around 7-8 years old.
First deciduous molars and canines: around 9 to 12 years old.
Second deciduous molar: It falls out last, around the age of 10 to 12.
The replacement of all permanent teeth is usually completed by the age of 12 to 13.

2. Situations that require attention
Premature tooth loss (before the age of 4): It may be caused by trauma, tooth decay, etc. It is necessary to check whether it affects the development of permanent teeth.
If a tooth falls out too late (still not loose after the age of 7): It is recommended to consult a dentist to investigate whether there is a missing permanent tooth or retained deciduous tooth.
If permanent teeth have grown but the deciduous teeth have not fallen off: "double-row teeth" may appear, and it is necessary to remove the deciduous teeth in a timely manner.

3. Nursing suggestions during the mixed dentition period
Maintain oral hygiene: Encourage your child to brush their teeth and use toothpaste containing fluoride.
Encourage biting on hard objects such as apples and carrots to promote the natural shedding of baby teeth.
Avoid licking or manually shaking your teeth: to prevent tooth misalignment.
Regular dental check-ups: At least once a year to monitor dental development.

If a child's tooth replacement time differs significantly from that of their peers, or if they experience pain or abnormal swelling, it is recommended to seek dental consultation in a timely manner.
